Geography The Amazon embraces 25% of South America area reaching nine countries: Brazil , French Guyana, Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. The greater part of the forest, 62%, is located in Brazil, and the remaining 38%, in the other countries. Click here to view map
Hydrography The hidrography of Amazon is composed by the largest basin of the world, with an area of 7,050,000 square meters. The river begins in a Peruvian lake, named Apurimac, at Andes Mountain Range, passing later to be called Ucaiali, and soon after, Solimões. This immense river, that receives four names along its course, is the second largest fluvial artery of the world.
Economy Extractivism is the main economic activity of Amazon. Many plant products are collected like rubber, Brazil-nut, and guarana. The area also possesses many mineral reserves, like iron, bauxite, manganese, calcareous, casserite, gypsum, lignite, copper, kaolin, diamond, nickel and gold. Primitive agriculture, hunting and fishing are subsistence kinds of economic activities.
THE AMAZON WITHIN BRAZIL
To facilitate the administration of the area within Brazil, the Federal Government established the "Legal Amazon" that consists of 8 states; Amapa, Para, Roraima, Amazonas, Acre, Rondonia, Tocantins, and parts of Mato Grosso and Maranhão.
Acre Besides forests out of which latex and brazil nuts are extracted, Acre shelters isolated indian tribes, the Serra do Divisor National Park and the Alto Jurua region famous for its intense biodiversity. The State of Acre consists of the Rio Banco, Cruzeiro Do Sul, and Xapuri cities. The highlights of the Rio Banco's centre are the Rubber Museum, the Rio Branco Palace built in 1930. While Cruzeiro Do Sul has a rich flora, Xapuri is a city where you feel at the beginning of the 20th century.
Amapa With 98% of the forested territory preserved, Amapa is waking up to the realities of ecotourism with diverse scenery, sustainable reservations, waterfalls and typical dances. It is the first state of Brazil to have all of its Indian lands demarcated, encompassing 8 ethical groups. The city of Macapa in Amapa, includes the MACRO ZERO monument to mark the EQUATOR - the best place to see the equinox.
Amazonas The state of Amazonas,the biggest of Brazil, includes the most common city , Manaus, Barcelos,Parintins,Presidente Figueiredo,S.Grabriel da Cachoeira,Tabatinga. Manaus offers you with the Meeting of the Waters, the Museum of Natural Sciences, Amazonas Theatre and also loads of shopping due its DUTY FREE ZONE policy. Para The State of Parà holds 26% of the "Legal Amazon" with the states Belém,Bragança,Marabá,Marajo and Santarém. Within your visit to Parà, you will be able to explore Belém and Atlantic Coast beaches that has the few fresh water beaches with waves in the world. The magnificient scene of the meeting of the peruvennial light green river Tapajos meeting with the white and muddy Amazon River.

Rondonia Rondonia has important reservations and natural beauty. There are festivals like BUMBA-MEU-BOI in June.It includes the city of Porto Velho, Costa Marques and Guajara-Mirim. Porto Velho offers many natural atractions interwined with man-made attractions around the rivers. The main highlight of Costa Marques is the ruins of the Principe da Beira Fort, which had been forgotten a long time but today considered one of the most important constructions of its kinds in Brazil.
